The 'Going Out Out Nowadays Is Different But The Same' Blog

Nowadays it honestly feels like I'm trapped in no man's land (oops sorry, no person's land, for the gender neutral brigade).

The more going out changes, the more it stays the same...

Is it me or is the clubbing scene nowadays just…something that I can't quite put my finger on yet!? It's like I'm too old to be at certain events (Tun up? I’m here what do you mean?) but too young to be stuck indoors...HELP!

Recently I met up with some friends and went 'out out' (look up Mickey Flanagan on YouTube for a clearer definition)

We ended up at some random place and what I learned that night, in a club (where everyone appeared to be under 25) is as follows;

DJs in 'young people's clubs' now only play the 1st verse of any song, it's like hey DJ, what about the rest of it?!?  Hand stamps are now a thing of the past so gaining re-entry is now practically a thing of the past.

Younger females (sorry I’ve given up on the ‘gender neutral’ description) appear to be passively hostile towards one another nowadays, why is this?

Younger men don't buy younger women drinks anymore, either it’s bad manners or they simply can’t afford the bar prices.  The words "excuse me please" when attempting to manoeuvre through a crowd are no longer an option, you just have to give a semi polite barge (if theres such a thing) and a half smile.

Whilst I can appreciate that bars and clubs need to generate revenue, the price of drinks are ‘eye wateringly ambitious’, to say the least. On another night out we visited a bar in Leicester Square (London) on an ordinary Friday night and ordered 2 double brandy and lemonades for the princely sum of...*drum roll*, just below £30.

Every group of friends, at some point, at least once during the evening, will all be updating their social media accounts or ‘chatting with virtual friends’ when their real life ones are right next to them. No one dances anymore.

As a black man (sorry, person of colour) I frequently get approached by unknown caucasian males who either want to shake my hand or take a selfie with me. Now whilst this may seem to be harmless, and 99.9% of the time I’m sure it is, I really struggle to remember the last time seeing it happen the other way around…hmmmm.

Queuing and the average bouncer are interesting. Whilst they are usually polite, why make everyone queue up for so long and the venue is empty? Is it to give the impression that it's so exclusively popular? Or are the doormen just being control freaks?!

So back in the day getting home from a night out mainly either consisted of waiting for the N29 night bus from Oxford Street to North London or walking miles. Nowadays that's unheard of due mainly to Uber and the weekend night tube.  Oh those were the days...or should I say nights!?

So what's your experience of going 'out out' nowadays?

While we can't change all the less than inspiring nights out (and day parties) you've attended, we can get you to the events playing your kinda music, visit GoodMuse.com for more info.
